I'm sure you've been bombarded by ads for every new diet fad that comes along, as well as every supposed "miracle diet pill" that claims that you can lose 41 lbs in only 17 days on their amazing "celebrity" weight loss plan... Puhhhhlllleeeeeze! What a bunch of con-artists!
First, let's take a look at a couple facts you need to understand if you want to free yourself of the pains of continuous yoyo dieting:
1. When calorie restriction goes bad -- Eating a diet that promotes healthy weight loss does not have to be overly restrictive. In fact, if you try to restrict calories too much, your body will fight back by lowering your metabolic rate and shutting down your fat loss efforts.
The better way to achieve weight loss success is to stay slightly below your caloric maintenance and eat very clean 6 days per week and have 1 cheat day every week, which goes above your caloric maintenance. This revamps your body's leptin levels, which stimulates your metabolic rate back up right about the point it started to decline after 6 days of undereating.
2. When low-carb and low fat diets go bad -- It is a BAD idea to try to restrict any one macronutrient to super-low levels. If you are trying to eat a diet super-low in carbs or super-low in fat, your body will fight back against you.
Remember, you need to give your body the nutrition it needs to function at it's highest levels and keep burning fat. Make sure to get plenty of healthy fats from avocados, coconut oil, nuts, seeds, whole eggs, grass-fed meats, extra-virgin olive oil, etc. Also, make sure to get healthy high fiber carbs mostly from fruits and vegetables (limit grain based carbs as best as you can).
